Bioterrorism Threat Brings Damper Maintenance To The Forefront

There is no doubt that the way we looked at the world on September 10, 2001 was changed dramatically with the events of the following day. September 11th changed the way we view national security, global politics, and travel. For those of us in fire safety, facilities management, and code enforcement, it triggered a paradigm shift that affects everything we do today in our daily operations.

As a company that focuses on smoke and fire damper inspections in commercial facilities throughout the United States, our role has evolved into more than just fire safety, and compliance. Our responsibility has expanded into providing an additional barrier in the event of a terrorist attack.

Net Neutrality And The Carrier Hotel

Carrier hotels and large data centers offer the telecom and network industry convenient locations to interconnect with other telecom companies at a physical level, in a neutral facility offering high density of available carriers. As telecommunications worldwide continues movement towards packet networks and services, Internet protocol exchanges and interconnection points will add even greater value to the global telecom community.

Large networks are demanding compensation from smaller networks and content providers for use of their infrastructure, while the Internet community in general is demanding free access (network neutrality) to that infrastructure used, or contracted from the large facility-based networks. Carrier hotels are essential to survival of smaller companies hoping to compete with established public utilities including AT&T, Verizon, and BellSouth.

The Bafe Sp203 Standard For Fire Alarm Systems

Fire Brigade Policy is set to change drastically and many businesses will find that they must pay to have their current alarm system replaced in order to meet their insurance requirements and to get Fire Brigade response in the event of a fire.

Even if you have recently had a brand new fire alarm installed to BS5839, unless the installer had BAFE accreditation, you may still find your insurance refusing to pay for fire damage.

The fact is that until an incident occurs, you will have no idea whether or not the alarm system you have chosen and paid for will do the job of protecting property and human life.

While an attorney is the traditional and more commonly used facilitator of the signature, is he/she really necessary and what, in fact, does the attorney do for the closing?

Protecting Intellectual Property

INTRODUCTION

The protection of intellectual property should be a significant concern to all Information Technology organizations. Without protection, commercial hardware/software vendors would quickly evaporate as others would inevitably steal their designs and programs. Corporate developers would also suffer if their ideas, inventions, and programs were misappropriated thereby causing them to lose their competitive advantage. In fact, our corporate landscape and standard of living would be radically different if we had no such protection. Fortunately, the framers of the U.S. Constitution were wise enough to implement legislation safeguarding the authorship and ownership of literature, art, and inventions, thus causing the United States to flourish in the arts and sciences. But the advent of the computer caused us to reconsider how we safeguard such property. For example, the concept of a computer program has been a bit nebulous to some people; should the source code be protected by copyright? What about the object code (executable)? Attorneys have been debating this subject over the last thirty years and there is still
general confusion in the field.

Intellectual Property And Copyright Laws

Just as one owns physical property and real estate, Intellectual Property (IP) allows people exclusive ownership of their creativity and innovation. It gives these people control on their innovations for which they are rewarded and encouraged to create further for the benefit of others.

The Intellectual Property Rights have their roots in the original Constitution which was designed by the Founding Fathers of the nation. It states that the Congress will have the power “to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”

Disability Insurance - Being Adequately Protected Despite Of Disability

It is not a good thing to become sick and unable to report for work for an extended period. Being sick and absent for a few days is bad enough, but being forced in bed for an indeterminate period because of disability can be quite a frustrating situation.

Aside from the boredom and pain of being unable to move around, what makes your situation more frustrating than ever is the fact that you are not being paid for the time you spent having to be forced in your bed. If you are the breadwinner of your family then it is not only devastating for you, but your family suffers severely, too.

Drummond Coal: A Trail Of Shame From Alabama To Colombia

Gustavo Soler, Valmore Locarno and Victor Orcasita are dead because they wanted better food and safer conditions for coal miners in Colombia. I have borrowed from numerous newspaper, wire and radio reports to write about the trail of shame that began in Alabama and ended with three dead.

Alabama-based Drummond Coal Company is in a U.S. court this week, accused of hiring paramilitaries in Colombia to kill the three union organizers at its operation in northeastern Cesar province. Drummond, a powerful utility company with enormous political clout in Alabama, is being sued by the families of the men slain near Drummond’s La Loma mines.

S-corporation - Making The Election

Once you decide to form a corporation for your business entity, you will quickly be faced with another question. Should the corporation pay taxes as a “C” or “S” corporation?

There is a lot of confusion when it comes to the tax designation of a corporate entity. The first thing to understand is a corporation is a “C” designation by default. As a “C” entity, the corporation will file and pay its own taxes with profits and salaries being paid out to employees and shareholders. Since the employees and shareholders have to pay personal taxes on the distributions, “C” corporations are considered double taxation entities. This is generally viewed as a negative thing.

A Soft Introduction To Software Patents

A definition of software patent is hard and one may not find the definition on any patent office website. Software embodied in a physical computer readable medium and aiding an innovative process or machine is considered patentable. In order to obtain a software patent, the patent application has to subtly claim the software as employing or performing certain function or process and as embodied in a computer readable medium.
