Vision And Visualization - Finding Ones Voice Continued
Let us get down to the real basics about visualization. Most people really don’t understand this whole process. They think that all you do is “think” that you are a billionaire and presto there you are. Well that is not exactly how it works. You want to find the real “You.” There is something that you want to become.
Some Guru’s and I use that term loosely, tell you to imagine that person you want to become. Well I don’t know about you but I don’t want to become Donald Trump. I would like to have the wealth of Donald Trump, but do I? Let me put it this way. Donald Trump is a Real Estate guy, his dreams, his actions and his whole universe is around the purchasing and selling of Real Estate. His dreams and what he would imagine would be more in line with “The Deal.” That is what makes Trump the Real Estate Mogul.
In visualization we want to find the real us. Not some blown up out of proportion person, not pie in the sky. We want to take ourselves and improve us not someone else. If you want to have wealth such as Donald Trump then your picture is what he sees as he walks into a 5 million dollar apartment in Manhattan, or his estate in Florida, that is the picture you want to have. You don’t want Trump in your head, because there is only one Trump, unless your goal is to work with or for him. What you must do is study his books, how he thinks and his strategies, and run those pictures through your mind as if you are executing them.
I have stated before not to force the vision. All you need to do is get it started, let the imagination run the rest of it. A good example is clear your mind, relax and imagine a blank screen in front of you, or TV set if that is better suited.
Now start your opening scene, let us say, you pull up in a car to your front gates. Those gates open up and you start to drive you car up the driveway and you pull up to the door. You are met by the butler who helps you out of the car and you thank him, and open up the double doors with the intricate glass work centered on both sides of the door. Create your own scene, by letting the imagination take over.
This mental rehearsal is to get your started in the direction of letting your mind flow freely. Your job is just to see in your mind’s eye how you feel as you go through the process of the day. Run this for about 30 minutes if you can with practice you could end up with a full length movie. Just let it flow do not attempt to force anything in. If it last for only 5 minutes you have more time to work on it. Things that represent wealth to me may be different for you, so make sure you select that which does represent wealth, health, fitness or whatever.
Any show, movie or book has an opening scene. You start the scene and let the rest unfold. The only thing I would advise is keep it positive and upbeat. Some people end up with a still picture, well that is a start but it is not running the “film.” A lot of athletes run a picture, such as throwing the basketball through the hoop. They visualize the basketball, they place themselves in position, now unless you are totally insane, would you hold on to the basketball or would you see yourself making the basket? It is natural that you would follow through and make that basket or as a golfer make that putt. None of this would be forced to occur. Your imagination knows exactly what you want to do.
Just now, I took a quick thought of being in front of a prospective employer. I saw myself sitting in front of the interviewer. The interviewer asked me “How Are You?”
Now here is something I would never have thought of saying, I would reply “I’m excited to be here.” Now this was just a quick visualization exercise that I did, right as I was writing this article. This is powerful, on many levels. It opens up a dialogue. In your waking hours when you think of this reply that I made, one can see a natural progression of questions, like “That is great, why are you excited?” You see now we are role playing and of course with some additional thought or research, if I was looking for a particular job, of course I would have the answers prepared before that interview.
This is why you let it flow. Now I interrupted the flow of that “imagined situation” above to show you how fast I came up with something I never thought of before. Naturally I would allow the film to keep running and go it course. You have a goal; there is an end result or outcome you want to see. Define what that is and play the movie, forget about injecting the different things that you would have to do. This is not the time for that. When you are rehearsing this movie, you open the scene up and let it run its course.
Public Speaking is the top most fears that people have. Now I was not one of those people that wanted any attention from anyone. I joined Toastmasters and gave my first speech, but before I did that, I ran the movie of everyone, clapping and cheering, and just congratulating me on my speech. I ran that move over and over again. The result is I won best speaker for the night. This isn’t the whole story either, the next day I had to give a business plan presentation to my graduating class of entrepreneurs, the mayor of my city plus a few other delegates. That would normally make people very nervous. I was very calm did my presentation and got some really good feedback.
When you allow your “theater of the mind” to go on its own, then you will find your real self in it. Actors are really good at this they internalize their character. They become that which they imitate. Visualization in itself will leave you clues to what you must “do” in order to “be” to achieve the results you want. If you run the film over and over again, there will be a “natural tendency” to internalize actions, feelings and the attitude that you desire.
Imagine you want an ideal relationship with someone. Start the movie, you approach a doorway, you knock and that person answers, now let it flow start with how you feel, excited the person has now opened the door then … you fill in the rest. Your end result of course would be a loving, caring relationship, so it has to look like something.
You create from your imagination and you start it off with your consciousness. You must be relaxed and don’t consciously force anything to run. Let this marvelous, god given gift of imagination run on its own. You will know what you need to be and you will become that which you imagine.
